What are some of your favorite things? Playing outside in the sunshine? Going exploring? Talking to your friends or maybe snuggling with your mom while she sings to you? If you said yes to any of these, you may have more in common with pigs than you thought!
Despite what people may think, pigs are clean, intelligent, fun-loving animals who form close bonds with their friends and family. Sounds like you have even more in common now, right?
Yet every year, millions of pigs are raised and killed for food. Pigs on factory farms are deprived of everything that’s natural and important to them and are abused and treated horribly for their entire lives.
Mother pigs are very affectionate and enjoy cuddling and bonding with their babies. On factory farms, they’re forced to live in tiny metal cages—called “farrowing” crates—which are so small that the mother pigs can’t turn around or cuddle with their babies. Can you imagine not being able to hug your mom?!
Piglets can have as little as 10 days with their mom before they’re taken away from her. Once they are, the mother pigs are forced to have more babies over and over, all of whom will then be taken away from her.
PETA undercover investigations have filmed workers stomping, kicking, yelling, and beating pigs with sticks. Pigs are still just babies—only about 5 months old—when they’re crammed into a truck with lots of other pigs and driven through all kinds of weather extremes to a slaughterhouse. Not much of a life for these cute, smart little guys and gals, huh?
All this suffering and pain is completely unnecessary and mean. If YOU want to help pigs, all you have to do is not eat them! There are lots of yummy vegan meats at the store, so why not skip the meat aisle and pick up some veggie bacon, meat-free hot dogs, or mock-meat deli slices?
Have a ♥ for all animals and go vegan!
