'Cooking With Kids' Contest Winners!
Recipes poured in from all over the country for PETA's first-ever "Cooking With Kids" contest. We received dozens of kid-friendly vegan recipes that parents and their children like to make together—and even some recipes created by the budding little Wolfgang Pucks themselves.
It was a tough task to narrow the entries down to just one recipe, but we thoroughly enjoyed all the taste-testing! Now for the moment you've all been waiting for: The winner is …
The Hodge family from Boise, Idaho!
The award-winning recipe, Shake-and-Make Soy Ice Cream, submitted by Vicki Hodge, is her daughter Olivia's favorite. We love it because it's yummy and easy to make, which is probably why they love it, too, so give it a try.
Shake-and-Make Soy Ice Cream
1 gallon-sized plastic zip bag
6 Tbsp. rock salt
2 Tbsp. sugar
1 cup vanilla soy milk
1/2 Tbsp. vanilla
1 pint-sized plastic zip bag
Cones
Multicolored sprinkles (optional)
- Fill the gallon-sized plastic bag half full with ice. Add the rock salt and set aside.
- Pour the sugar, soy milk, and vanilla into the pint-sized zip bag and seal.
- Place the pint-sized zip bag inside the gallon-sized zip bag and seal.
- Shake the bag for 5 to 7 minutes.*
- Use scissors to cut away a corner from the pint-sized bag, then squeeze the soy ice cream into the cones, soft-serve style. Top with sprinkles, if desired.
*Note: Use oven mitts to prevent your hands from getting too cold.
