Ah, Hollywood! Picture it: seeing your name in lights, being mobbed by adoring fans, raking in the dough, going to all the hottest parties, eating at the fanciest restaurants, wearing all the trendiest fashions, being best pals with all the coolest celebs—who wouldn’t want to live that way? Um … chimpanzees, that’s who!

On a recent episode of the popular Nickelodeon show All That, a young chimpanzee was dressed in shorts and used as a prop to get a laugh from the audience. Chimpanzees and other animals used by the entertainment industry never dreamed of becoming actors like you and I might have.

Want to do more for animals?
Did you know that chimpanzees are considered infants until they’re 5 years old? It’s true! In fact, in the wild, chimpanzees stay with theirmothers until they’re about 8 years old. All the chimpanzees and orangutans used in the entertainment industry are babies who would rather be with their families.

These sensitive, intelligent animals are taken from their families and deprived of all that is natural to them. Think about it: When was the last time you turned on the Discovery Channel and watched a documentary about chimpanzees in their natural habitat that featured chimps who were wearing clothes or riding unicycles?

During training, chimpanzees, orangutans, and other great apes are beaten, punched, and kicked by their trainers. When they aren’t being forced to perform, most live in tiny, empty cages. And when they are no longer useful to producers, they are often dumped at horrible roadside zoos—this usually happens when they’re only about 8 years old, but they can live to be more than 60!

These animals need your help right now! Please write a polite letter to Nickelodeon officials, asking them not to show this episode again and to adopt a policy against using chimpanzees and orangutans in any of Nickelodeon’s shows:
