After making the connection between the animals on her plate and the animals she called friends, Genesis Butler chose to leave animals off her plate for good when she was only 3. In the five years since then, she has devoted her life to sharing her kind choices with others: She has persuaded her entire family and many friends to go vegan, takes part in demonstrations all over her home state of California, and has even organized her own protest against the circus.
Genesis is currently working on a proposal for Meatless Mondays to be implemented at all the schools in her district, and she’s also putting together her own nonprofit organization to help supply funding to people who foster animals.
Five-year-old Matthew Drehmer went vegan after seeing part of a documentary about animals used for food. He decided he would never eat—or do anything else that might hurt—animals again.
Matthew donates all his birthday money to a local animal sanctuary. He also joins his mom at nutrition meetings, where they share advice and information about plant-based living with others in the community who are interested in living greener, healthier, and more compassionate lives.
Matthew frequently talks to local restaurants about adding vegan items to their menus and has successfully persuaded a restaurant to note all the vegan options on its menu. And he always shares his vegan snacks with friends and family to show them how tasty cruelty-free foods are.
