Why Didn’t I Think of That?

Work It

When Cypress Bay High School sophomore Sara Schwartzman met Mandy Moore at a CD-signing, the 16-year-old didn’t just float away, star struck, with an autograph; she left a handful of anti-leather stickers and a vegetarian starter kit with Mandy, who then mentioned that she wasn’t really a “meat person” anyway. A huge *NSYNC fan, Sara went so far as to meet with band member Chris Kirkpatrick, known for his charity work, and talk with him about veganism, leaving him with a stack of PETA leaflets and a vegetarian starter kit. (She doesn’t leave home without one!)

Help for Hot Dogs!

Summer can be deadly for dogs locked in hot cars even with the windows rolled down. Last summer, 9-year old Isiah Ayala found two pups panting in a parked car in 90- degree weather. So he aimed his Supersoaker water gun through the cracked window and squirted them until animal control officers arrived to rescue the dogs. For keeping them cool (and alive), Isiah was recognized as a hero by Santa Cruz County Animal Control and the Doris Day Animal League.

Sixteen-year-old Steve Shepard spends his summer breaks cruising shopping mall parking lots alerting people to the dangers of leaving dogs in cars by handing out PETA’s “Too Hot for Spot” leaflets and water bowls with the Delaware Animal Rights Association (DARA for short) logo.Wanna distribute “cool” advice in your town? Order the same leaflets that Steve uses from PETA’s Literature Department.
