Lucky Ducks

CritterpalsOne rainy Mother’s Day, as eighth-graders Adrian Crawford and Adam Lankford sloshed home from school, they spotted a duck who seemed upset. The boys got closer and found a mother’s worst nightmare: Her babies were trapped in a storm sewer! Quickly snagging a police officer to help them lift a manhole cover, they took turns holding each others’ ankles and reaching into the drain to scoop out the frightened babies. Said the officer, “They could have walked away. But these two boys actually made a decision to make a difference, and they stayed there.”

Cruel School Supplies Get Flushed

CritterpalsEzra L. Nolan Middle School’s “Critterpals” invited speakers to talk to their classes about animal tests, surveyed the school’s supply closet for animal-tested brands, and convinced the principal to switch to only cruelty-free supplies. The Critterpals topped off their five-month-long project by giving hundreds of dollars raised in their “penny drive” to their local humane society’s rescued-animal sanctuary.
