Gross Milk Fact
Got Pus? Milk does! When you drink cow's milk, you're getting millions of skin and pus cells in every single glass of milk. Doesn't that sound delish? Read on!

The dairy industry knows that there is a problem with pus in milk, so it's developed something called the "somatic cell count" to measure just how much of this gross stuff is ending up in every glass. The higher the cell count, the more pus you're drinking.

According to the dairy industry, any milk with a somatic cell count of more than 200 million per liter should be tossed out. Well, guess what? Every state but Hawaii is producing milk with pus levels that exceed this limit! The national average is 322 million. Other countries have stricter standards and would dump our milk down the drain. In fact, 17 U.S. states are producing milk that would be illegal to sell in Europe!

Ready for the Really Gross Part?
It's how cows are treated by the dairy industry. Cows make milk for their babies-not for humans. So to keep the milk coming, farmers keep cows pregnant. Female calves are either slaughtered or added to the herd. Male calves are unwanted "byproducts" so they're sold to veal farmers. These babies spend their short lives all alone in tiny crates so small that they can't even move just so that their flesh will be "tender" when they are killed. If you think that's wrong, the best way to help these calves out is to spit your milk out! Visit GoVeg.com to learn why vegan diets are better for you and for animals.
