Fish are Fascinating

Imagine how scary it would be to be swimming along, minding your own business, when suddenly, you're swallowed up by a huge net or impaled by a hook! That's what happens to fish! Fish are smart and interesting animals who have unique personalities just like dogs and cats.

Check out these fishy facts:

  • Some fish use tools, such as the South African fish who lay their eggs on leaves and then carry them to safety.
  • Fish use their mouths and tongues in the same way that we use our hands. They build nests, catch food, and hide their babies with their mouths.
  • Blind Mexican cave fish construct detailed “mental maps,” which help them detect changes in their surroundings.
  • Fish can learn from watching more experienced fish, including learning to avoid nets.
  • Fish even like to play! Oscar fish, for example, will toss and push ping-pong balls floating on the surface of the water.
