She's the voice behind substitute Spanish teacher Peggy on King of the Hill, and in real life, Kathy Najimy made her voice heard in her daughter's science class when 9-year-old Samia decided she wasn't cool with cutting up worms and other animals. “[Animals] have feelings, too,” Samia explains. “How would you feel if someone came up and killed you?” So mom Kathy met with the school principal and urged her to cut out dissection forever in favor of cruelty-free, advanced ways to learn about anatomy, like CD-ROMs and virtual dissections. Samia's school is now considering using cruelty-free options!
If your teacher is planning a dissection lesson, you can do something about it. “Write a letter to…your principal explaining how you feel about cruelty and dissection,” says Kathy. “There are other ways of learning about the insides of animals—computer programs, models that you can open up and study…books, and many other ways.” Visit CutOutDissection.com for ideas and resources.
