Two PETA employees rescued this 3-week-old hen who escaped from a shed on a factory farm. On the “farm”—more like a row of warehouses, really—hens are all jammed in together, left to grow as if they were mushrooms, on the manure-covered floors of windowless sheds. Because they are crammed together so tightly, the birds go crazy and peck at each other (think of yourself and your brother and sister fighting in the backseat of the car multiplied by 10,000, and you’ll get the picture). When “broilers” are just 6 weeks old—still babies—they are sent to slaughter.

But not this sweet, talkative gal. Madeline has a beautiful new home at Farm, a sanctuary for rescued animals. Her best buds are a rabbit and a turkey.
