Why Animal Defenders are Mad at the March of Dimes

Some experimenters for health charities, like the American Heart Association (AHA) and the March of Dimes, conduct animal experiments that make Dr. Frankenstein look like Dr. Doolittle. The March of Dimes has paid big money to experimenters to sew kittens’ eyes shut and force pregnant animals to take drugs, even though doctors have known for decades that taking dangerous drugs is harmful to developing babies!

Animal tests are cruel, and results don’t apply to humans—plus, experiments waste money and attention that should be spent on making sick people well. Fortunately, a growing list of charities refuse to fund animal tests of any kind, knowing that money is better spent caring for human patients instead of hurting and killing animals.

PETA Kids prove they’re all heart

Island Kids and Shelter Dogs Run for Their LivesWhen Wynn and Parks Barnard of San Juan Island,Wash., learned that their school was going to hold a “Jump Rope for Heart” event to raise money for the American Heart Association, which funds heartless tests on dogs, they jumped into action. They teamed up with their local animal shelter and organized the “Island Kids and Shelter Dogs Run for Their Lives.” They made T-shirts with a “Run for Their Lives” logo, baked cookies, wrote news releases to alert the media, and hung posters around town. When race day arrived, kids met at the shelter and leashed the dogs, and all took off running (and walking) along a nearby trail. Thanks to “Run for Their Lives,” many people learned how to help—not hurt and kill—dogs and other animals.

Bite Back• Write to health charities and ask whether they fund animal tests before you donate or help raise money for them.Tell those that pay for animal tests that you only help charities that don’t hurt animals.

• Get free lists of charities that do and that don’t fund animal experiments by writing to PETA (501 Front St., Norfolk,VA 23510) or by visiting MarchofCrimes.com.

• If your school is planning a fundraiser for a health charity that tests on animals, organize your own alternative, animal-friendly event, like a dog walk or car wash, and donate the money you raise to your favorite animal protection group or local shelter.
