Fans of TV’s Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer know the score: David Boreanaz plays Angel, a moody, mysterious man... er ... vampire in black who helps the helpless, fights for what’s right, and generally saves the world.

Turns out, that wasn’t just an act: The on-screen champion is an animal champ in real life. Need proof? David and two of his best buds—his dogs!—recently posed for PETA’s ad encouraging viewers to be angels for the animals in their lives.

Are you an animal’s hero? You can be! Keep reading:
• Hang out with your pal on a regular basis. Take your dog for long walks and be sure to let him or her stop and smell the fire hydrants. Spend quality time with kitty playing with pompom balls, catnip mice, and other toys that cats can’t resist.

• When dogs bark, they are trying to tell you something, so listen up. Have you ever told your pup to “be quiet,” even though everyone else was yakking away? We wouldn’t like it if our friends told us to shut up when we were telling them about our day!

• ID tags are a must—they’re the best way to make sure you and your friend are reunited if you ever get separated. One Grrr! reader outfits her cats with quick-release collars and tags that just say, ”I’m lost,” along with her phone number.

• Dogs want to be in the house with you—not outside, alone, on a chain! The great outdoors isn’t so great for animals left outside alone. They could get hit by a car, attacked by other animals, or burgled by a “buncher” (someone who sells animals to research labs).
