Many programs offered by 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA) encourage
kids to lovingly raise and care for baby pigs, cows, and other animals—then
sell them at auction to be killed and turned into hot dogs, hamburgers,
and other meat. No wonder so many frantic kids call PETA for help
to get their animals out of the county fair and into a safe haven!
4-H’s Cruel Lesson
People who think it’s good to teach kids to turn their backs
on their animal friends should be sent to the funny farm. Animals
raised on today’s farms aren’t brushed and petted with
caring hands as they are in 4-H and FFA programs. For the animals
doomed to be burgers and nuggets, just about the only time they are
touched by human hands is when farm workers hold them down and chop
off their tails, beaks, or horns. The animals live in filthy enclosures
where many suffer—and die—from diseases and injuries that
aren’t treated. At slaughterhouses, animals are thrown, kicked,
and prodded to the killing floor, where many are skinned alive.

Student Fights for Little Pig
Miami high school student Leonora Armas led the battle to save unkindly
named “Bacon,” a pig who was raised for slaughter by classmates
involved in the Future Farmers of America Club at her school. Babe
star and PETA supporter James Cromwell joined the fight to save the
imperiled pig, as did a school board member who not only offered to
purchase Bacon, now renamed “Daisy,” but vowed to get
all of the school’s “raise-to-kill” programs banned.
Their efforts paid off—Daisy was whisked away to a sanctuary
in Tennessee, where she will never have to worry about becoming “Bacon”
again.
