Burger King or Murder King?

Here’s some food for thought:

pigs in stalls* Some pigs are kept in tiny, iron-barred stalls so small that they can’t even turn around.

* Most laying hens who supply eggs for Burger King have their beaks cut off with a hot blade to keep them from hurting each other when they fight for space. Many hens are starved and denied water for up to 14 days in order to force their bodies into a new egg-laying cycle.

* Chickens raised for sandwiches are stuffed by the tens of thousands into windowless sheds with less space per bird than a standard sheet of paper. The birds are genetically bred to make them grow faster than they would naturally. As a result, the birds often suffer lung collapse, heart failure, or crippling leg deformities.

McDonald’s Gives Animals a Break
After 11 months and hundreds of PETA protests, the world’s biggest fast-food restaurant chain has agreed to our demands for more space for laying hens, an end to painful debeaking, more frequent checks on its slaughterhouses, and a promise to look for farmers who don’t keep pigs in tiny stalls. If McDonald’s can do it, Burger King has no excuse for turning its back on animal suffering.

Here’s how you can help:
Thank McDonald’s for taking an important first step. Ask the company to bring the McVeggie burger to all its restaurants in North America.

Now, PETA has learned that the company that supplies Burger King with animal products butchered steers while they were wide awake. Federal law says that cattle and pigs must be painlessly stunned so that they can’t feel anything when they are killed and cut up. So many steers are rushed through the slaughterhouse, workers say, that it’s impossible to make sure that the animals don’t suffer.

chickensBurger King is refusing to take the simple steps that PETA has requested—steps that McDonald’s has already taken. But Burger King will have to listen if enough customers turn their backs on the fast-food giant.

Here’s how you can help:
Ask Burger King to be kinder to animals.

Meant to Eat Meat?

Sure, people eat hamburgers, but imagine a world without grocery store freezer cases—a world in which people had to “prepare” that bovine carcass from start to finish!

We don’t have claws for flesh-ripping: Our flexible fingers are made to pluck pears and pick potatoes.

Our so-called “canine” teeth are puny compared to those of true carnivores like tigers and wolves, better for biting into strawberries than into sinews.

Our “inside plumbing,” which includes a super-long, winding digestive tract, is designed for slowly breaking down veggies, fruits, and grains. (Carnivores have a short, straight digestive tract in order to get the meat through quickly, before it does any damage.) It’s because humans aren’t designed to eat meat that many chicken chompers and burger lovers end up suffering from heart disease, cancer, and other ailments.

Your body is like a car—it needs the right fuel to keep it running smoothly, and for people, the right fuel comes from plants.

If a person poured Pepsi into a Pontiac’s engine, they’d have to have their car towed. No wonder so many people who try to fuel themselves with meat end up in “the shop.”
