10 Lessons From a Vegan Mama

The following was adapted from an article written by Carissa Leventis-Cox of Mama in the Kitchen, and she ain’t cookin’!

As a vegan mama, I sometimes face opposition, judgment, and criticism from others. But I’m confident that the dietary path I have chosen for my family is ideal. When the doubts start to creep in (and they do for all parents), I remind myself of these 10 simple lessons:

  1. Think for yourself. It is OK to think differently from the mainstream.
  2. Choose health. By eating an abundance of fresh, nutritious fruits and vegetables, we nourish our bodies.
  3. Be an efficient shopper. No need to roam around—we shop only in the produce and bulk sections of the market.
  4. Save money. Look: Our vegan grocery bill has decreased by at least a third since our omnivore days!
  5. Save time. Imagine! We don’t have to cook for hours. We can eat our fruits and vegetables raw. In fact, lunch will be ready in just five minutes!
  6. Don’t be wasteful. We don’t want to consume more than we have to. We can also compost our scraps, and they will enrich the earth.
  7. Be part of the community. We befriend local farmers and know where our produce comes from.
  8. Be respectful. We share this world and its resources with others, and our choices affect it.
  9. Be kind—to ourselves, to others, to animals, and to the Earth.
  10. Be conscious. Our daily choices have a great impact on ourselves, on others, and on the environment.
