PETA Kids asked you to send us your animal rights questions. After reading through all of your questions, we've selected five lucky people to have their questions answered right here on PETAKids.com. Find out what they were curious about:
Why do people think that we have to eat meat?
– Io, 12 years old, Palea Fokea, Greece
Many people think that they need to eat meat to be healthy. However, many people who eat meat are very unhealthy. When you consider all the antibiotics and hormones (illegal in many countries, by the way) given to animals on factory farms to make them as big as possible, the worst thing you can do for your body is eat meat and other animal products.
If you're concerned about getting enough protein in your diet, don't be. You can get the protein you need from much healthier kinds of foods like vegetables, grains, soy foods, beans, and nuts. The average person who eats animal products eats about double the protein that his or her body needs, and there's medical evidence to show that eating too much protein can lead to serious health problems like obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and kidney problems. So the best thing that you can do for animals AND yourself is to go vegan. Click here to learn more.
Does Burger King do any kind of animal abuse like McDonalds does to chickens?
– Berenice, 11 years old, Chicago, Illinois
Actually, PETA used to have a campaign against Burger King for the way animals were abused by its suppliers. But PETA called off its campaign because the fast-food chain agreed to conduct inspections of its slaughterhouses and take action against facilities that failed inspection. Burger King is also requiring that a percentage of its pork come from farms that don't use gestation cratesmetal enclosures that are too small for pigs to even turn around in. Burger King also rewards suppliers that use "controlled-atmosphere killing" (the least cruel form of killing animals).

Is it true that Herbal Essences tests on animals?
– Hannah, 11 years old, Ross-Shire, Scotland
Yes. Herbal Essences is actually a brand of hair products created by Clairol—a company that has yet to eliminate animal testing from its entire line of cosmetics and household products. Help save animals used for product testing by buying cruelty-free products instead. Click here to learn which companies DO and DON'T test their products on animals.

What is a cool fundraiser that I could do for my school that involves teaching kids about what it means to be vegetarian and raising money to help stop the abuse of animals?
– Skylar, 12 years old, Appleton, Wisconsin
Why not have a vegan bake sale to raise money for the animal charity of your choice? You could show all your friends how delicious meat-free dishes can be and pass out some PETA Kids literature on all the benefits of going vegan.

My grandma and grandpa buy fur and eat meat with every meal. How can I nicely ask them to be nicer to animals?
– Malena, 9 years old, DeKalb, Illinois
Many people who wear fur and eat animals have not been informed of the kinds of abuse experienced by animals raised for clothing or food. Find out the truth about fur farms and be sure to share this information with your grandparents.
In this day and age, there's no need for a dead animal to keep you warm when there are so many great alternatives in stores. Besides, fur only looks good on its original owner.
Complete our "Help Save Baby Seals" mission to do your part to save seals slaughtered every year for the Canadian fur industry.
Since your grandparents are meat eaters, I'd tell them about the kinds of suffering animals on factory farms go through—everything from being kept in cages so small that they can't even lie down to having their beaks and tails chopped off without any painkillers. I'd also tell them that eating meat is one of the worst things they can do for their health and the environment. If either of them have high cholesterol, it means they're eating too many animal products and are at risk for a heart attack. The best way to keep cholesterol down and help your heart is to go vegan. And I bet they don't know that more than half of all water used in the U.S. goes to raising animals for food. If your grandparents care about saving Earth's resources for you and generations to come, they would try not to eat animals.
