Speaking Up for Animals Can Make Any Kid a Superhero!

All superheroes have a really cool superpower. Lula Greenfield-Herold is 8 years old, and her superpower is that she speaks up for animals!

Lula was given an assignment to come up with an environmental topic that affected her school and that she was “passionate” about. She decided she wanted to make going vegan the topic of her project. At first, her teacher said she should come up with something more obviously related to their school. But Lula said, “Don’t kids eat meat in school?” That was such a good point that her teacher agreed that she should do her project on vegan living.

Lula’s project was so fantastic that she was picked to give a presentation at an assembly in front of 300 people! She was really proud of her presentation—everyone at the assembly loved it and learned that they can be kind to animals by not eating them.

One of the coolest parts of her project was that she made posters with a picture of a pig that said, “I am not bacon, I am a living being just like you.” She also made posters that said, “Be kind to animals,” and “Go Vegan: It’s good for the planet!”

Standing up for what you believe in is really important! We spoke with Lula about her project and what kids can do to make a difference for animals.

*****

Why did you decide to do your project on animal rights?

Because when I heard that we could choose something we were passionate about that was involved with school, I knew right away—I’m very passionate about animal rights, as a vegan, and I just wanted to.

What do you think your classmates learned from your project?

I’m not sure if they did anything about what they learned, but I think they maybe just thought about it at least. And maybe, if they’re vegetarian, they thought about becoming a vegan, because they’d be doing something good by being a vegan.

What do you love most about animals?

Of course, that they’re really, really cute (and usually very soft and fluffy). And I like the way that fish move and swim—it’s really cool. I care so much about animals because humans are animals, too, and I think they should all be cared about equally.

What is your favorite animal?

I really like pandas, raccoons, mice, bunnies, cats, fish, dolphins, and cows. And don’t forget pigs!

If you could have any animal superpower, what would it be?

To swim like a fish without coming up for air.

What are your favorite vegan foods?

Samosas, chocolate cake, and vegan cheese (especially Treeline brand).

What do you think we could do to make the world a better place for animals?

Maybe having protests for animals and speeches—to just know that you are doing something good by speaking up for animals.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

A vegan activist!

We were so inspired by the way Lula spoke up for animals in front of her school that we gave her this Superhero to Animals Award. We can’t wait to see what else she’ll do to help animals. 🙂
