Ask Your Kids’ School for Vegan Milk Options
Requesting vegan milk at school just got easier!

Big news for families: vegan milk may soon be showing up on more school lunch trays. Thanks to a recent change in federal law, schools participating in the National School Lunch Program can now offer vegan milk as part of a reimbursable school meal. This makes it easier for kids to choose a kind, vegan milk at school—a win for cows and a step forward for families!
In some schools, families may still need to ask for vegan milk. In others, a qualifying nondairy option may already be offered. Students with a disability-related need, including lactose intolerance in some cases, can request a vegan milk option. Schools may also provide a vegan milk option for students with dietary requests, such as a vegan lifestyle, when a parent or guardian makes the request to the school.
Cows make milk for their calves—not for humans—just like human breast milk is made for human babies. Cows are gentle, social animals who form close bonds and care deeply for their calves. Choosing vegan milk helps spare cows from suffering in the dairy industry and gives kids a kinder option they can feel good about!
Families do not have to figure this out alone. These resources can help make requesting vegan milk at school easier and give you more information about why this change matters.
