Fireworks Frighten Animals. Let’s Celebrate Kindly!
Skip the fireworks and make holidays safer for everyone, including companion animals and wildlife.

Fireworks might look sparkly and exciting, and lots of kids grow up thinking they are just a normal part of celebrating. But to our animal companions and wildlife, the loud noises and bright flashes are scary, confusing, and dangerous. Dogs and cats may panic or run away, and birds and other animals can get startled, lose their way, be separated from their families, or run into roads and buildings while trying to escape. The good news is that families can still have lots of fun while choosing kinder ways to celebrate.
If fireworks are happening near your home, here are a few ways to help animals stay safer:
- Keep animal companions cozy indoors.
- Close the curtains to help block out the flashes.
- Stay nearby if you can, so they know they are not alone.
- Turn on a fan, soft music, or the TV to help cover up the noise.
- Make sure dogs and cats have ID tags and microchips, just in case they get scared and try to escape.
- Skip the fireworks and attend visually exciting laser or drone shows instead! Other fun activities to try this summer include going stargazing, doing a nature scavenger hunt, or snuggling up for a movie at the drive-in. Share these ideas with your friends and family!
