Summer Campers Dubbed ‘Heroes to Horses’
PETA Kids just honored a summer camp with our first-ever “Hero to Horses” Award! The summer camp, Down to Earth Astoria, which has campers ages 7 to 11, protested in Central Park in New York City twice this summer to call out carriages that still use horses to pull them in the park!

These animal defenders and their summer camp director, Rachel Sardina, lined up along the park’s path, waved handmade signs, and chanted, “Free the Horses!” at passing carriages, forcing riders to think twice about using horses to pull them through the park.
There is a law proposed, Ryder’s Law, that Mayor Adams of New York City is signing to ban horse-drawn carriages in the city. This law will give relief to animals who are forced to pull carriages in all weather conditions in the busy city environment and would outlaw the use of horse-drawn carriages. This law is named after a horse named Ryder, who collapsed on the streets of New York while pulling a carriage. ☹

You don’t need to wait for a law to be passed to be kind to animals! Make sure you and your family NEVER ride in horse-drawn carriages and speak to other family members and friends about doing the same.
