PETA Kids’ Guide to Creating a Vegan Nursery

Looking for ways to instill your new bundle of joy with empathy at an early age? Passionate about choosing cruelty-free items when setting up your vegan nursery? PETA Kids has you covered! Check out some of our favorite cruelty-free must-haves for new babies and new parents:

Diapers and Wipes

Testing on animals is not only unkind but also completely unnecessary. It may surprise you that some companies test chemicals used in diapers and wipes on animals. Help prevent animals from being used in cruel, painful tests by putting your baby in cruelty-free diapers. Honest, Seventh Generation, and Whole Foods 365 brands are great options.

Diaper Cream

Stay stocked up on cruelty-free diaper cream that soothes sensitive baby bums. Check out Hello Bello’s Soothing Diaper Rash Cream, Babo Botanicals’ Sensitive Baby Fragrance-Free Diaper Cream, Pipette’s Diaper Rash Cream, or Hush’s Baby Boo Bamboo Natural Diaper Cream for options that are kind to all.

Baby Lotion

Help spare animals a lifetime of torture in laboratories by buying cruelty-free baby lotion like Pipette’s baby lotion, Earth Mama’s Calming Lavender Baby Lotion, Babo Botanicals’ Sensitive Baby Fragrance-Free Daily Hydra Lotion, or Shea Moisture’s 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Baby Lotion.

Clothes

Your compassionate choices should be celebrated! Show off your vegan pride with some adorable animal rights onesies for your bundle of joy to wear. The PETA Shop, HippieBabyCo, The Peaceful Activist, and our list of vegan baby onesies are all great places to start stocking up.

Shoes

Tiny baby booties can be so much fun, but if they’re made of leather, wool, or other animal-derived materials, they’re no fun for the animals killed to make them. Millions of cows, goats, sheep, and other animals suffer and die in the fashion industry. Cut cruelty out of your nursery by choosing adorable vegan baby shoes from companies like CLAMFEET and Cabooties.

Books

Teaching children empathy and kindness for all—no matter someone’s species or size—is an important part of parenting, and reading to your child early on helps them begin to understand language. Animal-friendly kids’ books like Junebug: No Life Too Small, Before You Were Mine, and Plants Feed Me can help instill these qualities in your child. They also make great gifts for other kids in your life. We’ve put together an extensive list of animal-friendly kids’ books that we think will be perfect additions to your vegan nursery.

Cleaning Supplies

Animals used in tests for household products are often forced to inhale or swallow chemicals—or substances are dripped into their eyes, which can cause cloudiness, swelling, discharge, ulceration, hemorrhaging, and even blindness. Prepare for those inevitable baby messes by choosing cruelty-free cleaning products from brands like Seventh Generation, Mrs. Meyer’s, and Method. Don’t forget to buy cruelty-free laundry detergent as well.

Breastfeeding Essentials

If you’re planning to breastfeed, make sure your nursery is prepped with some essentials like vegan nipple balm and snacks to help you refuel. Unfortunately, many of the nipple balm samples new parents receive in the hospital are made with lanolin—which is an oil derived from sheep’s wool and isn’t vegan. Check out Earth Mama for vegan nipple butter, or use an organic oil like extra-virgin, cold-pressed coconut oil. Keep some shelf-stable snacks near your nursing station, too, like Clif bars or GoMacro bars, nuts, and dried fruit. Maybe include some sweet treats like fruit chews or Choco No No’s, too. You deserve it!
